What are ERC Starting Grants?
ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or programme.
Applications for an ERC grant must be submitted by a single Principal Investigator (PI) in conjunction with and on behalf of their Host Institution. The host institution must be based in one of the EU Member States, or one of the Associated Countries. Principal Investigators from Thailand are eligible.
Applicant Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal. Applications can be made in any field of research.
How much?
Starting Grants may be awarded up to € 1.5 million (THB 57 million ) for a period of 5 years. (pro rata for projects of shorter duration). However, an additional € 1 million (THB 38 million) can be made available to cover eligible “start-up” costs for researchers moving from Thailand to the EU or an associated country and/or the purchase of major equipment and/or access to large facilities and/or other major experimental and field work costs.
An ERC grant can cover up to 100% of the total eligible direct costs of the research plus a contribution of 25% of the total eligible costs towards indirect costs.
Expected Time Commitment
With the support of the Host Institution, the successful PIs are expected to lead their individual teams and devote a significant amount of time to the project. They will be expected to spend as a minimum 50% of their working time on the ERC project and a minimum of 50% of their working time in an EU Member State or an Associated Country.
How to Apply
ERC grant applications can only be submitted in response to a Call for Proposals. A call is open now and will close on 13 January 2022. Please note that this is an annual call. Calls are published on the European Commission’s Funding and Tenders Portal.
